Check out the laws in your state for homeschooling. Many states, including mine, don't require parents to send their children to school until they are 6. So if you are done with your preschool years and aren't quite ready to send your child into Kindergarten in a public school, you might not have to. Most school administrators won't clue you in to this fact so it will be your job to investigate for yourself. Any homeschool parents in your area should know this, but if you don't have any homeschool friends, then you can find the information for your state online.
One of the main things that parents can do with their preschool children is just simply read to them. If you can read to your child for 20-30 minutes a day, you will be surprised at how much they will learn. There are tons of children's picture books that teach about science, history, and the world around them with simple stories and pictures. Take advantage of these books when you are reading to your children and don't try to reinvent the wheel by forcing yourself to follow a preschool curriculum.
Your child might enjoy filling in workbooks and that is fine. Sometimes children will fill in whole workbooks and not retain any of the material though. Most of the fun of preschool comes in doing hands on activities with your children. If you are at a loss for ideas, just check out my 101 Ways to Make Preschool Fun books here and you'll have more than enough fun interactive times with your children.
They say that the more senses we use, the better we retain the material we have learned. Use this concept when teaching your preschool child. Read to them and interact with them and they will learn so much that it will make your head spin. Children love working along side of us and experiencing the world with their parents. Once you start homeschooling preschool this way, you will be able to move right on into Kindergarten and beyond.
